The city forest, or ‘Stadtwald’, is located to the south of Frankfurt and is expansive and seemingly endless, covering nearly eighty square kilometres.
It is one of the largest urban woodland areas in Germany and is the ideal forest near Frankfurt when you want to do something in nature. The Stadtwald is also right next to Sachsenhausen.
The City Forest is criss-crossed and easiy to navigate thanks to nature trails and paths. There are also ponds, sport paths, playgrounds, over one thousand seating benches, and several resting huts, providing protection in cold or wet weather.
The forest is a popular local attraction, an excellent place for walking and jogging, and mostly peaceful except for its proximity to Frankfurt Airport; avid plane spotters can see some of the latest passengers and luxury jets coming in low as they approach Frankfurt Airport.
To get to the City Forest by public transport, take the S7 or Tram 14.
In the Stadtwald are are tow main attractions:
Stadtwaldhaus / State Forest House – a visitors centre in the middle of the forest, ideal for children and nature loves.
Goethe Turm / Goethe Tower – a great lookout over the forest and Frankfurt, but you have to climb the steps yet it is worth the effort.
